Manchester United Football Club can feel a little hard-done-by this afternoon. Jose Mourinho’s men came-from-behind to take command of the tie, but for a late goal from Ross Barkley. The match finished 2-2.
The first half was a dull encounter. Chelsea was probably just shading the fixture, they deserved their 1-0 lead. The match changed in the second 45, United were on the front foot, they were the aggressors, they tried to press on and secure all three points.
Following the game, Mourinho met the media and he explained why United were the dominant team. He’s right, even when they were leading, they didn’t sit back, they tried to make the game safe.
“In the second half, we were the best team, we were calm and we had complete control. We always tried to play, even at 2-1 and in extra time, we didn’t have a negative game.” Mourinho is quoted as saying by United’s official Twitter account.
It was lovely to see United go out and have a go. Anthony Martial was the star of the show, he’s deadly when in full-flight, and to see him thriving, for a manager whom he supposedly doesn’t enjoy working with, was brilliant.
Sure, the result wasn’t ideal, but you have to be pleased with the performance as a whole. It’s encouraging and it gives United something to build upon.
Next up, Juventus at home, as a certain Cristiano Ronaldo returns to Old Trafford…
