The January transfer window is rapidly drawing to a close, and it looks as though Jose Mourinho is now happy with the players he has at his disposal. That comes after letting both Morgan Schneiderlin and Memphis Depay leave on permanent deals – both of whom struggled to make an impact.
However, one player the manager has no intention of letting leave is Ashley Young – that’s according to the Manchester Evening News, who say that the self-proclaimed Special One wants to keep hold of the 31-year-old. That’s despite reports earlier in the week claiming that the player himself asked Jose Mourinho if he could leave.
The MEN team understand that Manchester United don’t want to let another winger go after the sale of Memphis Depay last week, as in my opinion, it would leave them thin on the ground in case of injuries.
Young has generated plenty of interest, however, with the report adding that West Brom, Swansea, Everton and Watford were all sniffing around for his signature. Now that Jose has made his mind up, it should end these rumours pretty swiftly.
Honestly, I have mixed feelings about this one. Ashley Young has always been a solid squad player capable of filling in all over the field – but he’ll never be more than that.
He’s a guy who always gives 100% commitment to the cause, and for that reason alone I’d seriously consider moving him on for the good of his career. At 31, you have to be playing football, and he’s obviously not happy with the amount of game time that is currently on offer.
