Jose Mourinho made four key additions during his first transfer window in charge, with the Portuguese coach adding real quality in the form of Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and others. The gaffer chose not to invest in the January period, but it looks like this summer, we’ll be spending.
Now, Yahoo! Sport say that the self-proclaimed Special One has identified the left-back slot as an area the manager will prioritise for recruitment when the window opens, as he looks to add a top class left-back to the Manchester United ranks.
The report then names Benjamin Mendy of AS Monaco as a potential suitor, with the Frenchman really making a name for himself in Ligue 1. I’ve personally not seen much of him, but he was absolutely outstanding against Manchester City over both legs of their Champions League tie.
If the Anthony Martial transfer fee from AS Monaco is anything to go by, the 22-year-old certainly wouldn’t come cheap but he’d be a wonderful bit of business if Edward Woodward can get it done.
Then you have to think what that means for Luke Shaw. In my eyes, he’s the most talented left-back we have in the current squad, but it just feels like Jose Mourinho hasn’t taken a liking to him for some reason. That’s backed up by the fact that Mourinho has opted to use Marcos Rojo, Daley Blind and Matteo Darmian out there instead of Shaw.
