Manchester United have already added one defender to the playing squad this season, in the form of talented centre-back, Eric Bailly. However, Mourinho’s work clearly isn’t done there as he looks to add some experience to that area of the field.
According to the Daily Record, Manchester United are keen on landing Southampton centre-back, Jose Fonte. The Portuguese man is almost 33, and he’d certainly provide an old head that the younger defenders can rely upon.
United aren’t the only team interested in signing Fonte though, with Everton having already made an official £9million offer for the Southampton man – who is believed to be keen on a reunion with Ronald Koeman.
This would certainly be an astute piece of business by Mourinho. United do need a reliable centre-half who’ll be fit and available for the majority of the season, and Fonte would be perfect for that. It is nothing more than a short-term fix though, with Mourinho probably looking at Eric Bailly as a long-term solution to United’s defensive concerns.
