Paul Pogba perfectly epitomises the modern-day football player. A social media wizard with a new haircut every week, flaunting a fresh dance move every time the ball hits the back of the net. Is there anything wrong with that? No.
However, he also has a modern-day agent. Mino Raiola is out for one thing and one thing only; lining his pockets. Put those comments about United legend Paul Scholes to one side… Still, the word I’d use to describe Pogba’s representative is toxic.
On the flip side, we have Jose Mourinho. The self-proclaimed Special One himself. He’s won absolutely everything there is to win within the game. However, at United, we’re already in the dreaded third season without even the sniff of a league title.
Who lasts longer?
The pair’s relationship is fractured to say the least. Mourinho’s stubbornness probably won’t help him out. He’ll drop Pogba without even batting an eyelid. That’s just in his nature.
Pogba will have the wrong things being whispered in his ear by Raiola. Make no mistake about it, the Frenchman has no loyalty to United. He already displayed that once when he left Old Trafford as a teenager.
We shouldn’t expect to see him stick around in an effort to appease the fans. You can bet your bottom dollar, if FC Barcelona came calling, he’d be on his way to the Nou Camp as quickly as possible. Can you hardly blame him? I’m not so sure.
Mourinho’s on a massive downward spiral. As soon as you lose the dressing room, it’s curtains. Right now, I think the Portuguese is teetering on the edge. One more horrendous loss like the Brighton & Hove Albion shambles, and things may be too far gone for him to turn it around. In the end, I think that will be telling.
The Verdict? Player-power always wins out in the modern-day game. I fancy Paul Pogba to outlast Jose Mourinho. Whether the Frenchman remains at Old Trafford for much longer remains to be seen, though…
