Jose Mourinho reveals why Anthony Martial didn’t feature against Feyenoord

Manchester United hammered Feyenoord by a 4-0 scoreline at Old Trafford yesterday evening, with Jose Mourinho’s men finally getting the goals that their recent play has deserved. It definitely bodes well going forward, and that’s an area of the field where the gaffer has a whole host of options.

During the aforementioned game against Feyenoord, there was a notable absentee, with Anthony Martial not even making the 18-man squad that took part in the Europa League clash.

Now Jose Mourinho has lifted the lid as to exactly why, and it wasn’t down to an injury which is obviously positive news.

“He was okay for this game, it was just an option.” Jose Mourinho is quoted as saying by the Daily Mirror.

“He played last Sunday, I cannot play with 12 players, I cannot use on the bench 19 or 20.

“You wanted to see Mkhitaryan, I wanted too. I cannot play all of them at the same time so it was just an option.

“Players have to win their positions. They are friends, they are colleagues, they work together every day, but at the end they compete between themselves to have more chances to play.

“Anthony played against Arsenal; this was the moment to give a chance to Mkhitaryan to start.”

The Portuguese coach really has an embarrassment of riches at his disposal, particularly in that final third of the field. It simply isn’t possible to keep everyone happy, and it shows just how strong we are when Anthony Martial doesn’t make the bench.

You’d imagine Jose is just trying to ease him back into things, because before the international break he had been out injured. In my opinion, he’ll probably be back involved come West Ham at the weekend with a place on the bench the most likely situation.
