Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has explained that Romelu Lukaku told him he wasn’t fit to start the FA Cup final.
That’s according to the Manchester Evening News, and they quoted the manager, who says that it ‘made no sense’ to start a player who felt he wasn’t fit and ready to go.
Like the gaffer says, what else is he supposed to do? If Lukaku says he wasn’t ready to play then he has no choice in the matter. Why start a player if he’s injured and not feeling fit enough to start?
In the second-half when Lukaku came on, I think it was plain for all to see that he’s still nowhere near 100%. He looked leggy, slow and poor on the ball – which is the opposite of how he’s been for us in his debut season.
Honestly, I’m gutted for him. Lukaku has been our best attacker this term and the game was so much tougher without him at his best. Who knows, it could’ve been a different result if he weren’t injured.
You also have to consider that Lukaku probably has the World Cup in his mind which is fair enough – those only come around every four years, and representing yourself at the highest level of international football must be a real honour.
