Jose Mourinho sees Timothy Fosu-Mensah as Antonio Valencia’s long-term replacement, according to The Telegraph. The 19-year-old Dutchman apparently needs to gain greater discipline, and Mourinho hopes he can do that whilst on loan at Crystal Palace.
This news comes just hours after a move that sees Fosu-Mensah head to London on loan was reported. At first, I was bitterly disappointed that we were letting such a talent leave the club on a twelve-month deal, because he has plenty to offer us in the short-term.
Although when you think about it, the versatile defender is at that stage in his career where regular football is an absolute must. If he remains at Old Trafford, he’ll probably only play in the odd cup game here and there, but at Palace, the opportunity for him to participate in Premier League matches every single weekend has presented itself.
Fosu-Mensah has played a fair few games for United at the highest level and we know he can cope with the pressure of playing in a big game. Now, this is the time for him to work hard elsewhere and come back hungrier. Just look at how well Andreas Pereira did whilst on loan at Granada last season, and now, the Brazilian is closer than ever to a first-team place.
