The usually reliable Duncan Castles has given his take on Manchester United over the last 24 hours, and he writes that Jose Mourinho has asked the club to target a new full-back, holding midfielder and a player capable of playing just in behind the striker.
On top of that, Jose Mourinho has also given the club the go-ahead to hand Zlatan Ibrahimovic a new Old Trafford contract. Now, instead of bringing in two new strikers (including Lukaku), the self-proclaimed Special One expects the influential Swede to become available for selection around January time.
Mourinho wants the club to significantly strengthen the playing squad due to the fact that we’re now back in the Champions League, and of course, the club will be looking to improve on their sixth-placed Premier League finish last term.
For me, the news that we’re targeting a holding midfielder is the most important. At times both Paul Pogba and Ander Herrera looked hesitant when going forward, probably because they knew that there wasn’t much protection in behind them.
The same can be said about our full-backs. Outside of Antonio Valencia, we didn’t really have anyone else who we could rely upon, and the gaffer tended to chop and change; particularly on that left-hand side.
Finally, a new attacker is the third position, but unless someone else leaves, we have plenty of options in that area of the field – including the likes of Anthony Martial, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Juan Mata. All of whom need to have big seasons in 2017/18.
