Jose Mourinho trying to win race to sign world-class Frenchman for Manchester United: report

Last summer, Manchester United and Antoine Griezmann were embroiled in a major transfer saga. It looked for all the world that the world-class Frenchman would be headed to Old Trafford, but instead, he decided to stay put at Atletico Madrid.

Personally, I thought we’d heard the end of that rumour, but today, reports from Don Balon, per the Daily Express, are claiming that United are back in the market for the 27-year-old; with manager Jose Mourinho going on the charm offensive to lure him in…

The self-proclaimed Special One is supposedly set to offer Griezmann a starring role in an attack filled with huge strength-in-depth. Watching him sat in that #10 role just in-behind Romelu Lukaku, with Alexis Sanchez on the left would be a thing of beauty.

My only concern would be Atleti’s asking price. There is no doubt that Diego Simeone would demand a colossal transfer fee as a player of Griezmann’s quality doesn’t come around all that often. I’d be surprised if United were the only elite club making a move for him, too, with the aforementioned report naming FC Barcelona as another potential suitor.

If this news is genuine, I’d expect this deal to take weeks to sort out. If anything is to happen, I highly doubt it’d take place before the World Cup.
