Manchester United’s poor summer transfer window was well documented. Jose Mourinho wanted to significantly strengthen the playing squad, in order to build upon the second-place finish that was achieved last term, but the backing from Edward Woodward just wasn’t there.
Fast-forward a few months and United are struggling. Now, according to The Guardian, it looks as though the club are ready to right those transfer wrongs by giving the self-proclaimed Special One their backing when January rolls around.
The two positions in which Mourinho wants to invest in? A centre-back along with a goalscoring forward… Apparently, he’ll be given around £100million to spend.
A new defender was seemingly the summer priority but that never happened. The fact that it became so public could explain why the current group of centre-halves have been performing so poorly, but there is no getting away from the fact that investment is needed.
Romelu Lukaku needs help. He has been pretty tragic to start this term, while the goals from elsewhere (Anthony Martial aside) just aren’t flowing. Marcus Rashford is a talent, I still believe he’s the future of the club at the striker position, but he’s just not ready yet.
My main concern is the fact that buying in January is notoriously difficult. This time around it’ll be no different. I know £100million is a fair chunk of cash, but in this day and age, I’m just not sure that’s going to be enough.
