Jose Mourinho wants signings in two key positions before Thursday’s transfer deadline

Underwhelming is the word I’d use to describe Manchester United’s transfer window so far. The only big-name signing the club have made? Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk.

Presumably, that isn’t for the want of trying. According to Paul Hirst in The Times, Jose Mourinho is still chasing two signings before the Thursday transfer window deadline. He says that the self-proclaimed Special One wants to add one central defender, while also bringing in one attacker.

The name Hirst mentions is Jerome Boateng, which is something that Sky Sports Germany have also suggested over the last 24 hours. There is no doubt that the German international would be a huge upgrade on what we already have, with the 29-year-old bringing some much-needed experience to the table; provided the deal does indeed go through, of course.

Although the report doesn’t specify what position of attacker United want to sign, my guess would be a right-winger. We have some classy players over on the left-hand side, while Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard are more than good enough to play in the middle. Willian would be my choice as again, he’d come with experience, while also having worked with Mourinho previously. It’s going to be tight to push two signings over the line before the window slams shut, however…
