Manchester United had several players with winding down contracts this season, amongst those was Juan Mata.
Eventually, the Red Devils came to an agreement with the 31-year-old, who signed a two-year deal with the option for a further year if the club choose to extend.
Anyway today in an exclusive, The Sun on Sunday claimed that the Man United star took a £45,000-a-week pay-cut to remain at Old Trafford – which is exactly the kind of dedication we need at the club given the current circumstances.
Mata apparently used to earn £180,000-a-week and now he’ll take home £135,000-a-week to seal a two-year deal rather than penning a one-year contract.
The only issue with Mata has been the fact that he’s constantly been played out of position. If there’s one wish I have going into the new season, it’d be that the attacking midfielder finally gets a chance to show what he can do playing in the #10 position.
With that said, I’m not holding my breath. For whatever reason, the four United managers he has worked under have all stuck Mata out on the right-hand side – which is a position he simply just doesn’t have the pace for.
Now he’s signed his new deal and his future is secure for the next few seasons, I hope we see him utilised correctly…
