Juan Mata’s time at Manchester United could be coming to an end.
In a world full of massive egos and huge personalities, Juan Mata has been an absolute breath of fresh air.
His work with Common Goal, his genuine love for the game and the nice guy attitude has been wonderful to watch.
Sadly for Mata, the on-field chances have been few and far between over the last couple of years. Honestly, I sometimes forget he’s still at the club because he’s been used that sparingly.
It comes as no surprise to read then, that the United star, who has made 278 appearances for the club, is unlikely to be offered a new contract this summer. That’s according to The Athletic, meaning that Mata could leave for free in a few months’ time.
Given his lack of minutes coupled with fairly sizable wages, this feels like the correct decision. As sad as it would be to see such an influential figure in dressing room leave, United have to get away from offering players new contracts when their performances haven’t really deserved one.
This has to be a cutthroat industry and United need to get younger all over the field. Letting Mata leave would hurt in some aspects, but it is absolutely the right move.
You also have to think about it from his point of view. Mata, at this stage in his career, just wants to be playing football. A move back to his homeland Spain seems like an ideal situation, to a club that can give him the minutes he deserves.
