Man United are seemingly closing in on their first signing of the summer in the form of Jurrien Timber.
With Manchester United amongst the worst in the Premier League when it comes to goals conceded, it’s no surprise to anyone to read that the Old Trafford club are constantly being linked with signing new defenders.
Despite massive money being spent on the back line in recent years, Erik ten Hag will have been disappointed with the performances from the likes of Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane and others.
Enter, Jurrien Timber. The Ajax centre-back has been linked with United before since Ten Hag was confirmed as our new manager. I guess it’s an easy link to make given Timber improved massively under our 52-year-old boss over in the Eredivisie.
Now, Portuguese journalist, Pedro Almeida, has another update for us in regards to United’s pursuit of Timber.
Apparently, the 20-year-old player is now just ‘one step away’ from joining United this summer, with the Reds set to pay £30m (€35m) to bring in the Dutchman.
Although young in age, Timber already has over 100 professional appearances to his name already. That’s plenty of experience for a man who is barely out of his teenage years.
Timber was solid during Ajax’s title-winning season in 2021/22 and it’s easy to see why Ten Hag would like to bring his countryman with him to Old Trafford – particularly at such a reasonable price.
Ten Hag is also looking at Timber’s versatility as another big positive. Not only can he play centre-back, but Timber can also be deployed on the right-hand side of defence.
With Aaron Wan-Bissaka set to be moved on and Diogo Dalot still sowing inconsistency within his game, it’s a good bet to suggest if this move is made, Timber could find himself starting out in the right-back slot first and foremost.
Would a Man United move for Jurrien Timber make sense? Let us know your thoughts in the comment box below.
This is not the kind of signing that utd needs. Does Utd want a back up for varane, Baily, lindelhof. Timber plays 5 not 6. Man utd needs a defender that will displace Maguire. So this signing is not needed
