Man United transfer target, Jurrien Timber, has been warned against making the move this summer…
We’re still a couple of days away from the summer transfer window officially opening, though Manchester United have already been linked with what feels like every name under the sun.
I guess that was always an inevitability given the stature of Manchester United and the many holes they need to fill. Erik ten Hag is seemingly big on familiarity, given the amount of Ajax players rumoured with a potential Reds switch.
It’s Jurrien Timber who has made the most headlines, with the centre-half being talked up as a priority signing for the 20-time Premier League champions.
In a rather intriguing turn of events, one former Manchester United manager has warned Timber against making a Reds switch this summer; Louis van Gaal.
The current Netherlands manager has stated that Timber has the talent to play in the Premier League, though perhaps it’s too soon at this stage in his career.
Check out what Van Gaal said in full here:
“I think a player with his qualities can play in the Premier League,” said Van Gaal, per the Manchester Evening News. “That’s not a problem. But if he has to make this step now… that’s another question. It is not so wise I think [to join United]. He has to play.”
This feels like Van Gaal trying to force Timber’s hand. We’re now just a few months away from a World Cup, with the Dutch manager a big believer in only selecting players who are regular starters for their club. It goes without saying, Timber would be by no means a guarantee to be in the XI here at Old Trafford.
Although Timber’s versatility absolutely helps his argument, I’m just not sure Erik ten Hag would throw him straight into the line-up from day one. This is an extremely young player who will absolutely need time to adapt and adjust to a higher level of football.
If United still believe Timber is good enough, they should push ahead with trying to make this move happen. However, the player himself has plenty of things to weigh up before agreeing to the transfer. These latest Van Gaal comments only add to that.
With that in mind, I’d be surprised if we hear anything concrete on this move anytime soon.
