Manchester United take on FC Barcelona tomorrow, and we already know that Ander Herrera will not be present with an injury.
However, El Partizado de COPE have gone one further, they say that Herrera has injured his quadriceps and they add that the Basque-born midfielder is a ‘serious doubt’ to play in the return leg at the Camp Nou next week.
That means that Herrera could also miss the Red Devils’ home game against West Ham this weekend, handing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a real headache for their next three fixtures.
It’s tough because Herrera has a unique skill-set. I don’t think we have a player in this squad that has his ability to transition from defence into attack so quickly. Not only that, we’d be missing out on his work rate, passion and determination.
Putting his contract discussions aside, we need Herrera to be at his best between now and the season’s end if we’re to secure a top-four finish, ensuring our Champions League berth for next term.
In terms of replacements, Andreas Pereira is the best in terms of a like-for-like swap, but I wouldn’t be wholly surprised to see Scott McTominay get the nod as he has been in wonderful form under the Baby Faced Assassin.
