Kieran McKenna emerges as ‘candidate’ to become next Man United boss after meeting

Kieran McKenna is under consideration as a possible candidate to become the next Man United boss.

It’s no secret that Erik ten Hag may find himself out of work this summer. The Dutchman has struggled mightily this term and although injuries haven’t helped his case, the ex-Ajax man deserves heavy scrutiny.

Over the last couple of months, the links to potential replacements has been growing. Gareth Southgate appears to be atop the list right now, although that doesn’t whet the appetite all that much…

Over the last 24 hours, journalist Santi Aouna believes a certain ex-Red Devils coach could be a genuine possibility for the job; Kieran McKenna.

According to his information, United have made the 38-year-old a ‘candidate’ to become their next manager, while a meeting between McKenna’s agent and United has taken place in ‘recent days’.

Aouna reiterates that Southgate is still a ‘top target’ though United are worried about when the England boss will be free to take charge at Old Trafford due to his international commitments.

McKenna has done an outstanding job with Ipswich Town over the last eighteen months. Back-to-back promotions, playing brilliant football, is no mean feat. He deserves all the credit in the world for what he’s achieved.

However, I still feel this job would come a little too soon. I’d love to see McKenna repay faith in Ipswich Town, by giving them one season in the Premier League. Imagine if he guides them to safety? That’d be his best achievement to date.

I’d also worry about some sections of the United dressing room already having preformed opinions on McKenna. Don’t forget that some of these mercenaries were at the club under the Ole Gunnar Solskjaer days when he was a coach with the Red Devils.

In the long run, I’d love to see McKenna come back. In the here and now, it feels like a risk.
