Kobbie Mainoo is all set to be given his first England start at a major tournament.
Manchester United Football Club ended the season with an FA Cup trophy, despite the fact that campaign on the whole was largely disappointing.
Credit has to go to Erik ten Hag, and his squad, for keeping their heads when it would have been oh so easy to capitulate and throw in the towel.
No doubt the biggest plus from the campaign was Kobbie Mainoo. The midfielder transformed the team with his energy, youthful exuberance and sheer skill. He’s now showcasing his talents at the highest level for England, too.
Now, journalist Matt Law has confirmed that the United starlet is ‘in line’ for his first start at a major tournament this weekend, when England take on Slovakia. The Stockport-born player is being rewarded for his brilliant 2023/24 season.

Mainoo came on against Slovenia at half-time last time out, with England looking far better as soon as that switch was made. He added calmness, on-ball quality, energy and real balance to a midfield that looked poor beforehand.
If we’re being honest, this decision was a no-brainer for Gareth Southgate. Mainoo has simply given the gaffer no choice but to keep him in the team, after displaying maturity and calmness under immense pressure. Now, it’s up to the midfielder to repay that faith with another great performance.
We’ve all seen it time and time again. Mainoo plays better when all the chips are pushed into the middle of the table. I fully believe he’ll drop another masterclass here.
