Kobbie Mainoo reacts to first senior England call-up

Kobbie Mainoo has been called up to the England squad for the first time in his career, with the midfielder taking to social media to share his thoughts.

Manchester United picked up a huge victory at home to Liverpool in the FA Cup on Sunday. It was the type of performance and result that can kickstart a season.

Without question, Kobbie Mainoo was Man of the Match. His movement, composure, passing ability and sheer skill was on full display from minute one. It was a performance of real maturity for a man who only made his senior debut a few months ago.

Before the game, questions were being asked about Gareth Southgate, who seemingly chose not to call Mainoo up for senior international duty. Well, after the match, the England gaffer has seemingly had a change of heart. England have since confirmed Mainoo has received a call-up after initially being selected for the U21s.

Then, Mainoo took to social media to express his delight at receiving his first call-up, admitting that it’s an ‘honour’ to be given the opportunity to represent the Three Lions.

What a whirlwind few months it has been for Mainoo. From being out injured in November, to receiving your first England opportunity shortly after. It just goes to show how brilliant the young man has been since breaking into the first-team fold.

For United, he’s now among the first names on the team sheet and he deserves all the praise that’s coming his way. The fact that he’s already ahead of names like Kalvin Phillips in the England pecking order is testament to his ability and skill.

I guess the tough job now is breaking into the side. You have Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice ahead of you. While we all know how much Southgate loves Jordan Henderson…

Congratulations, Kobbie!
