Veteran goalkeeper Lee Grant has decided to call it a day and retire from professional football.

There’s going to be major changes made at Manchester United over the summer, with the Red Devils moving in a different direction under Erik ten Hag.

Obviously, it’s going to take time for the Dutchman to fully implement his ideas and strategies, but he has to start somewhere, right?

Well, one man who won’t be involved in the new regime is Lee Grant. Today, the club confirmed that Grant will retire from professional football.

At the ripe old age of 39, the £30k-a-week (Spotrac) United man has taken the decision to hang up the gloves for good.

After enjoying a career totalling over 500 professional appearances, Grant can be extremely pleased with everything he’s achieved within our game.

At United, Grant only played a couple of games, including against Astana in the Europa League, where he became the Reds’ oldest European debutant of all time aged 36.

From Stoke City, to Derby County and Burnley, most of Grant’s appearances came in the Championship – a league in which the Englishman was consistently one of the best goalkeepers.

However, it was that Premier League campaign with Stoke City that really made United take notice. Grant emerged as a top-tier goalkeeper in the most difficult competition within our sport – making outstanding saves against the best players every single week.

At United, Grant’s lack of playing time was probably expected in a sense, particularly with David de Gea ahead of him in the pecking order. However, it always looked like he’d be moved on from United this summer, particularly with Dean Henderson and Tom Heaton also both at the club.

The fact that Lee Grant will now retire could also mean United may look to bring in another backup goalkeeper at some point.

Thanks for everything Lee!
