Lille confirm Angel Gomes signing on a free after he left Man United

Whoever was eventually going to seal the Angel Gomes signing were getting a hell of a player for free. Well, we now know the Englishman’s next destination…

He’s heading to Ligue 1 club Lille, the French outfit confirmed earlier today. Congratulations to them for acquiring Gomes, as their reputation with developing young players continue to look mightily impressive.

Gomes’ contract with Lille runs until 2025, though in the 2020/21 term, he’ll be playing for Portuguese club Boavista on loan…

My initial reaction to that news is that surely United could have promised him a loan move next term, with a view to being integrated into the first-team if it went well?

Who knows, perhaps Gomes’ mind was already made up and he became sick of waiting for a chance that never came at Manchester United – which is fair enough.

I guess it’s just disappointing to learn that he feels the grass is greener somewhere else than Old Trafford.

Maybe Ole knows more than we do…?

We have to trust Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with this one. Let’s be honest, the Baby Faced Assassin has been more-than-willing to give young players a chance – provided they’ve shown their quality.

Maybe something has gone on behind the scenes, or simply Solskjaer doesn’t rate Gomes as highly as we all do…?

There are physical concerns due to his small stature, though I’m not sure you can doubt his on-ball quality. That said, he never really impressed when given a first-team chance, despite always lighting it up at youth level.

Once a Red, always a Red, though. I do hope he enjoys success wherever he ends up.

Good luck, Angel!
