Lisandro Martinez admits Gabriel Heinze is his idol

Lisandro Martinez was full of praise for ex-Manchester United defender, Gabriel Heinze, in his latest interview.

Manchester United Football Club made a brilliant move over the summer, signing Lisandro Martinez when a deal for Jurrien Timber eventually fell through.

In the end, the fact Ajax decided to keep Timber may well turn out to be a blessing in disguise. The Butcher of Ajax signed instead. He has been absolutely outstanding.

Yes, it did take a game or two for Martinez to adapt to English football, though with each passing match, the centre-back continues to impress.

At this point, Martinez is undroppable. The question marks over his height are now completely gone, while we United supporters are loving watching him play game-in-game-out.

Now, while facing the media ahead of the Chelsea game, Martinez has named a former Red as his ‘idol’; Gabriel Heinze.

Heinze was another Argentine cult hero here in Manchester, with Martinez admitting that he ‘love(s) the way’ Heinze played.

Check out what Lisandro Martinez had to say on Gabriel Heinze here:

“That’s right,” Martinez is quoted as saying by Sky Sports. “Gabriel Heinze is my idol. I love him. I love the way he played, very aggressive, good mentality, good mentality in the duels. Every game as a final. He was a top player.”

“I try to play like him. We are a bit different as well, but I like his mentality.”

The compatriots are similar in style, but also slightly different as Martinez states. They both play with that Argentine passion, though Martinez is probably better with the ball at feet.

At the time, it felt like United had made a bit of a bold call to bring in Martinez, with the club desperate to sign a defender. However, Ten Hag knows the Argentine inside-out and it didn’t take him long to prove to us all what an excellent addition to the squad he is.

I’ll also leave you with this thought. If Harry Maguire is going to be removed of club captaincy, Martinez should absolutely be in the running for the role.

Do you think Lisandro Martinez can be as successful as Gabriel Heinze was at Man United? Let us know your thoughts in the comment box below.
