Man United could sign Lisandro Martinez as early as today.
Suddenly, things are progressing pretty quickly for Manchester United in terms of incoming transfers.
Earlier today, we covered a claim from Fabrizio Romano, who suggested that a move to bring in Frenkie de Jong was moving forward, after an agreement with FC Barcelona had been reached.
Journalist Simon Stone also has some positive information in regards to United’s pursuit of Lisandro Martinez.
Overnight, he tweeted that United are closing in on the signing of 24-year-old defender, Lisandro Martinez. Talks are at an ‘advanced’ stage, while a deal could be complete as early as today.
It goes without saying, a centre-back was identified as a big need early by Erik ten Hag. Now, it finally looks like he’s closing in on Martinez; a player whom he worked with at Ajax.
Martinez actually won Ajax’s Player of the Year award last term, proving himself as the key cog in their Eredivisie title-winning side.
The defender, although short in stature, fits Ten Hag’s style of play perfectly. Having already worked with United’s new Dutch boss is a massive advantage. It means the Argentine can come straight into the side if required, and perform at a decently-high level while he adapts to Premier League football.
There will undoubtedly be some sort of adjustment period required due to the massive differences between the Dutch and English leagues, so it’s up to us fans to give him time.
It goes without saying, the sooner this deal is done, the better. Martinez would greatly benefit by playing some minutes during United’s pre-season tour of Australia. Tomorrow’s game against Melbourne Victory is absolutely out of the question, but perhaps Tuesday’s fixture vs Crystal Palace is a realistic target for the 24-year-old? I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
