Lisandro Martinez will wear the number 6 jersey at Man United.
Lisandro Martinez is in the building. The Argentine now has to rapidly get up to speed ahead of the new campaign starting in a little over a week.
The 24-year-old had been an Erik ten Hag target for what feels like all summer, with United in extensive negotiations with Ajax.
Thankfully, United’s new Dutch manager eventually got his man who was named Ajax’s Player of the Year in 2021/22.
Now the hard work really starts for Martinez, who is no doubt pushing himself to get as fit as possible before the Brighton game in nine days time.
Anyway, ahead of that match, Martinez’s shirt number at United has been revealed by the club. He will wear the number 6 jersey for the 2022/23 season.
The previous wearer of the number six was Paul Pogba, who has since headed back to Juventus upon the expiry of his Reds contract.
Martinez will be hoping to do this jersey number proud, with Wes Brown and Jaap Stam, so the Argentine is in good company.
After signing for big money, the pressure will be on Martinez from day one. The media have made a lot about his height, with the centre-back standing at 5’8. Obviously, that’s not ideal, though he has other strengths that fit perfectly in line with what Ten Hag wants to achieve.
I do believe the plan is to partner Martinez with club captain Harry Maguire, to see if the pair can form an on-field connection that can start preventing needless goals from being conceded.
Either way, it’s nice to see what shirt number Martinz will wear. Hopefully, Christian Eriksen’s number is also revealed soon.
