Lisandro Martinez has won Man United’s August Player of the Month award.
Manchester United Football Club played five league games in August. It’s fair to say the Red Devils started poorly, but Erik ten Hag turned things around in the second half of the month.
A big reason why the 20-time Premier League champions started to pick up results was the defensive consistency. Suddenly, this is a back line that is playing with confidence, believe and most importantly; trust.
A settled defence is what wins trophies. United have played the same back four in all three victories. It’s no coincidence. Undoubtedly, Lisandro Martinez has been the most impressive member of the said back line.
The Argentine is playing with a belief in himself, putting all the talk about his height to one side and slowly proving everyone wrong. He’s winning headers, proving to be a real defensive leader, while also intercepting passes, and looking good with the ball at feet.
It’s no surprise, then, to see the Argentine named as Man United’s August Player of the Month, as voted for by fans.

I’ll be honest, after that Brentford game, I started to become a little worried about Martinez. His height looked a problem against Ivan Toney, though the Argentine has bounced back in the perfect way. Credit must also go to Ten Hag for trusting in his player.
In games against the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal who love to play with the ball on the deck, I have full belief that Martinez can play like this on a regular basis. Perhaps there needs to be some tactical tweaks when facing direct sides like Brentford, but we’ll overcome that obstacle when it arrives.
For now, though, let’s enjoy Martinez’s brilliant month of August. Hopefully, this is the start of a long and successful Reds career for the 24-year-old.
