Manchester United Football Club has always given young players a platform. Look at Marcus Rashford, Scott McTominay, Brandon Williams and Mason Greenwood all flourishing within the first-team.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has placed faith in the mega-talented players that are being developed by the Old Trafford club. Heck, he’d be crazy not to.
You look at the success they’re all having and you’re immediately filled with immense pride. The crazy thing is that at youth level, there’s probably a handful of players trying to make their breakthrough and all of them deserve their chance.
Angel Gomes, James Garner, Tahith Chong, Dylan Levitt and many more. However, Ethan Laird could well be the next in line…
The Reds full-back has made a couple of senior appearances, but over the weekend, the 18-year-old United starlet took to Twitter, as he looks to ensure Reds fans don’t forget about him…
If you’re unaware about Laird’s talents, it’s worth noting that Williams was actually shifted to left-back because he couldn’t get in the team ahead of Laird.
The problem for Laird is that Aaron Wan-Bissaka continues to show he’s probably in the top two right-backs in the country. Breaking into the first-team ahead of The Spider certainly won’t be easy. However, as a tandem, they could work similarly to how Luke Shaw and Williams operate down the left.
That leaves Diogo Dalot out of the picture which seems pretty harsh, but during his appearances, he definitely looks more comfortable further up the field.
For now, Laird has to keep impressing at PL2 level. Perhaps he’ll get his chance on pre-season tour (if there even is one this summer), and maybe a loan move for the 2020/21 season makes the most sense. He’s definitely in with a chance of making a big first-team breakthrough in the not too distant future, though.
