Wayne Rooney is Manchester United’s most senior player in terms of experience and length of service at the club, and it was fitting that the 28-year old was named our new captain this summer. However, Louis van Gaal has casted doubt about Wayne Rooney’s future position, and hinted he could be used as a midfielder more often.
“We have played well, but can improve, and I was not so satisfied with Rooney as a striker and Mata as midfielder.” Van Gaal said.
The Dutchman continued: “That is why I changed. Rooney can play in more positions, he’s a multi-functional player and I have tried him in a striker’s position. He has played well, but not spectacular. Falcao is a striker and I think he can do it better.”
Since his spell there a couple of seasons ago, I’ve always preferred Wayne Rooney as a midfielder. He has the ability to track back, switch the play with a raking 40-yarder and he doesn’t shirk a tackle either. When you combine that with his lack of pace and creativity, it all adds up for him to move back into the middle of the park.
Its interesting that he highlights how Juan Mata disappointed him as a midfielder, and it could well be the end of Mata’s Manchester United career. Unlike Rooney, Mata isn’t very versatile and if he isn’t played in the #10 slot it probably means he has no place in the team at all.
