Louis van Gaal claims he purchased Martial for the next Man Utd manager

Manchester United made a huge deadline day move to bring the little-known Anthony Martial to Old Trafford for a £36million fee, and today the Dutchman has confessed that he didn’t buy Martial for himself, but for his predecessor.

Louis van Gaal said: “I have not bought Martial for me, I have bought him for the next manager of Manchester United.”

This could mean one of two things. Louis van Gaal doesn’t plan on sticking around beyond his current contract, or Anthony Martial is still a raw talent that needs to be developed and nurtured, and it’ll be a few years before we witness his true capabilities.

Manchester United’s next manager could well be sitting by the touchline already in the form of Ryan Giggs, who the Iron Tulip has tipped for the job once he calls it a day.
