Louis van Gaal claims Man Utd could’ve been champions but for poor start

In the first 10 league games of the season, United won only 3 matches, having dropped points against the likes of Swansea, Sunderland, Burnley and Leicester. These poor run of results saw United sat in 10th position.

Since then, United have turned the tables, winning 16 of their last 23 games.

Louis van Gaal said: “We had a very bad start. If we’d started well, we could have been the champions.”

The 63-year-old reiterated that the season objective was to finish within the Top 4, to see United return to playing Champions League football.

“I hope we shall achieve our goal for the season and play next season in the Champions League but we still have 15 points to fight for. It is not done yet.”

The 20-Times-Champions face Everton today at 13:30 BST: a win would see them leapfrog Manchester City and Arsenal into second place.
