Manchester United confirmed the signing of ex-Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes this evening, with the 32-year old signing for the club on an eighteen month contract with the option of another year. Valdes has been training at the club for a while now, as he recovered from a serious injury.
Now the shot-stopper is fully fit and ready to go, and hopefully he’ll get his chance to shine as the games start coming thick and fast as we enter the business end of the Premier League season.
Upon Valdes signing, Louis van Gaal said:
“Victor has remained very professional throughout his rehabilitation from injury and has been very impressive during his training sessions with the first team over the past weeks. He joins the club as the number two goalkeeper and is a great addition to the first team.”
The bottom line of that text is the most important by quite some distance, as Valdes is coming in as a backup to David de Gea. The 24-year old will retain the #1 jersey until the summer at least, and hopefully now United can focus on tying David de Gea down to a long-term deal.
