Manchester United take on Middlesbrough in the Capital One Cup fourth round this evening, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake for both sides. Louis van Gaal surely has to see this competition as a winnable one, and a chance to get that first bit of silverware under his guidance.
Ahead of the game, the usually reliable Mark Ogden has wrote that Louis van Gaal is ‘considering’ resting Wayne Rooney, Chris Smalling and Anthony Martial for the clash – three players who have been heavily involved for the club over the last month or so.
One player who particularly needs the rest is Wayne Rooney. He has been in terrible form and sitting him out for a game or two might do him the world of good whislt restoring that confidence.
Anthony Martial is only young, and burnout is obviously a factor at just 19. He has played plenty of football for United as well as France since he joined the club so now would certainly be a good time to sit him out.
The same goes for Chris Smalling who has arguably been our best player so far this season. Lets give him a break and have him fit and ready for a tricky trip to Crystal Palace on Saturday.
