Manchester United secured a massive victory at home to Wolfsburg in the Champions League last night, with the side coming from behind to grab their first three points of the group stage. One man who once again stood out was Chris Smalling, and the manager was full of praise for the Englishman.
“I am so happy because the goal shall give Smalling such a boost. His development as a player is amazing, so I’m very happy with him.” Van Gaal said.
Smalling’s development as a player over the past twelve months has been absolutely outstanding. He had a horror show and was sent off at the Etihad Stadium in the away derby last year, but since then he has been one of the best defenders in the league.
He’s still only 25 too, which is relatively young for a centre-back. It feels like he has been at Manchester United for years already, and you can now see why Louis van Gaal opted to not buy a new defender this summer.
