Man United tried to sign Sadio Mane when Louis van Gaal was in charge, the Dutchman has admitted.
Naturally, Manchester United tend to be linked with pretty much every name under the sun when a transfer window rolls around. Sadly, that’s part and parcel of being amongst the biggest clubs in the world. The name sells.
United have undoubtedly taken a step back over the last decade or so, with the Glazer’s certainly holding the club back to some extent. Manager’s have come and gone too quickly.
One of the rare bosses to win a trophy at the club was Louis van Gaal. The Dutchman delivered an FA Cup crown, before talks of his sacking started that very same night.
If given more time, perhaps Van Gaal could have taken us back to the promised land.
Van Gaal is now Netherlands boss. Now, when conducting his pre-match press conference ahead of their game against Senegal, the gaffer admitted he ‘wanted’ to sign the world-class 30-year-old, Sadio Mane, when he was United boss. Van Gaal admitted he ‘chased’ the player who he is a ‘big fan of’. Mane has been ruled out of the World Cup recently due to an injury.
Check out what Louis van Gaal said about Man United trying to sign Sadio Mane on his watch here:
‘I wanted him when I was the manager at Man Utd,’ said Van Gaal, per The Metro. ‘I chased him at the time. I am a fan of Mane. He can break open a match and I would say Senegal will really miss him.’
Now plying his trade for Bayern, Mane will most likely be remembered for his time at Liverpool where he was truly outstanding week-in-week-out.
He was the catalyst for a Jurgen Klopp revolution at Anfield. His goals, assists, work ethic and willingness to win helped set the tone for our fierce rivals.
There can be no doubt Mane would have had a similar effect if he moved to Manchester instead. Perhaps not to the same extent due to how poorly the club has been run at times, but nobody can deny Mane would have been an outstanding signing.
