Manchester United found themselves down to ten men rather quickly against West Brom, after Juan Mata got sent off for two bookable offences. After the game Louis van Gaal revealed what he told Mata regarding the incident.
“What can I say when you send off a player like Mata,” Van Gaal said. “I have asked him if it’s his first red card and he said yes.”
The manager then went on to express his displeasure at the Spaniard’s ‘stupid’ first yellow card, before admitting his unhappiness at the referee on the day, Mike Dean.
At the end of the day, Juan Mata more than deserved to be sent off after a few minutes of madness from the 27-year old. His punishment is he’ll now miss United’s FA Cup quarter final at home to West Ham.
A player of his intelligence will learn from this experience. Its the first red card of his career and no doubt he’ll be extremely upset by the situation, and hopefully he will come back from this stronger.
