Manchester United’s hunt for a spot in the top four will be one game closer after this weekend, with a trip to West Ham in the offing on Sunday afternoon. However, ahead of the game, Louis van Gaal has told Ander Herrera that he simply has to improve to feature in the starting eleven.
“I have to compare him with people like Rooney and Mata, for example, so that’s difficult, they are all at a high level – he has to improve,” said Van Gaal.
“But he’s a great guy, he’s a very great professional also, so that’s not the problem – his problem is he has to compete with high level players and Rooney is also the captain so he has a privilege.”
For me, this is an odd one. Wayne Rooney isn’t an out-and-out central midfielder and that often shows. He doesn’t have the brain to pick the right passes more often than not, and the fact that he has a ‘privilege’ worries me. Is there anything worse than a Wayne Rooney who knows he doesn’t have to perform to get into the side?
