Despite a struggling defence, Manchester United and Louis van Gaal will not be delving into the transfer market for a new centre-back in the upcoming winter window, according to the Express. Louis van Gaal is happy to show his faith in the current defensive options, despite a whole host of injuries decimating the back line in particular.
“Do we have to buy (defensive) players? No. We have more than enough.” Van Gaal said after the win over Southampton.
We certainly have a a lot of centre-backs available for selection when everyone is fit, but here lies the problem – the ones we have struggle to stay fit for more than a few games. Phil Jones made a great start to the season but we haven’t seen him for a couple of months, Chris Smalling went off injured in the win over Southampton, and Jonny Evans made a return in that game. We have Marcos Rojo who has been fairly consistent, and the two youngsters in Tyler Blackett and Paddy McNair who have drifted in and out of things.
Personally I reckon signing a centre-back in January should be the top priority despite constant links with a move for AS Roma’s Kevin Strootman. Hopefully Louis van Gaal is bluffing and he’ll make a move for another centre-halve as soon as possible.
