An injury update on Luke Shaw has been provided by Erik ten Hag, with the left-back not fit enough to play against Serbia last night.

Manchester United Football Club endured an injury-ravaged 2023/24 campaign. It could have cost Erik ten Hag his job, though the Dutchman has been given another season at the helm.

The United manager was on punditry duty for England against Serbia last night back in his homeland, offering some excellent insight into the game – and his United players in particular.

With Luke Shaw named among the substitutes, the assumption was that the left-back was fit. However, when Kieran Trippier went down with injury and Shaw didn’t come on in his place, it told me that the United man still isn’t ready.

Then, Ten Hag, per @TheEuropeanLad, provided an update, revealing when Shaw will start playing for England. Nobody will know better than Ten Hag, with the United boss confirming that Shaw will not be back fit until after the group stages.

Check out what the United gaffer had to say in full here:

Shaw will miss the games against Denmark and Slovenia, making this a huge gamble by Gareth Southgate. He’s pretty much missing half of the tournament and no doubt Shaw is pushing his body in order to get back fit sooner. From a United perspective, that’s far from ideal.

There can be no doubt that Shaw is England’s best left-back when fully fit, though it’s risky to throw him straight into the starting line-up when he reaches as close to 100% as possible. Ideally, he’d be eased back into things, though I’m not sure England are in a place to do that – particularly if the Trippier injury is a bad one…
