Man United sweating on fitness of Maguire, Lindelof ahead of WBA game: report

Manchester United have a couple of concerns ahead of the WBA game this Saturday, as both Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof are nursing injury issues.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer lost Luke Shaw for a prolonged period due to a hamstring injury last time out, while the international break has been less-than-kind.

Doubts about the fitness of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial have crept in, though I get the impression one (or both) should be well enough to take part against West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.

However, the same cannot be said for Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof. According to ESPN, United are ‘sweating’ on the fitness of the key duo ahead of the aforementioned WBA game on Saturday night…

In regards to our club captain, Maguire did play a full 90 minutes for England last night. Following full-time, though, he reported bruising to his foot. He’ll have been assessed upon his return to Carrington yesterday.

On the other hand, club medical staff are growing ‘increasingly concerned’ in regards to Lindelof. He’s suffering with a back problem, though the Swede has been playing through the pain barrier for much of the season. That back issue meant he’d only play a half for his country this week, being taken off after 45 minutes as he simply couldn’t carry on.

So what now for United?

Well, their defensive struggles have been evident even with their supposed best-pairing fit. If one, or both of Maguire and Lindelof cannot make this game, we’re in serious trouble.

It’d mean Axel Tuanzebe would be almost a certainty to start but I’ve got absolutely no idea who’d play alongside him as Eric Bailly and Phil Jones are both injured. That leaves Scott McTominay, who played at centre-half for Scotland, and Teden Mengi, who is still an unknown quantity…

If I’ve judged Maguire correctly, he’ll force his body through the pain barrier to get out on that field, but if not, It could be interesting to see a partnership of Mengi and Tuanzebe.
