Back on July second, Manchester United firmed up their interest in transfer target Harry Maguire with an official bid. We covered the story from the BBC here.
It didn’t take Leicester City long to knock back he £70million offer that was placed on the table. Just how far would United be willing to go to get their man? That remains unclear.
What we now know is that Maguire himself wants the switch to Old Trafford, according to the usually reliable Andy Mitten, writing for Unibet.
Mitten also adds that Leicester don’t need to sell the 26-year-old United target, and they’ll ask for £90million if they’re to part ways with their key centre-half.
Defensively, the Red Devils had their worst season in years during the 2018/19 campaign, shipping 54 Premier League goals across the 38 games. Perhaps Jose Mourinho was right when he asked the club to deliver him a new centre-back. Perhaps that’s eventually what cost him his job.
Anyway, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has seemingly identified the same problem within the United squad, although the Reds aren’t prepared to pay what Leicester are currently asking for, per Mitten.
To me, there’s no doubt that Maguire would be a significant upgrade on what we have. The question remains, is ‘Slabhead’ good enough to have a similar impact to that of Virgil van Dijk when he moved to Liverpool? There’s only one way to find out…
