Man United could make a move to sign Joey Veerman if they fail in their attempts to acquire Manuel Ugarte.

After sealing deals to acquire both a centre-back and a striker, Manchester United could now look to improve their central midfield ranks.

The top target, for at least a few weeks, has been Manuel Ugarte. However, all has gone a little slow on that front. Perhaps it’s due to the fact that money is tight and the Reds are in a position where they have to sell before they can buy.

CaughtOffside have provided an update on that front, claiming United are still pushing to try and get that deal over the line. However, the Old Trafford side are looking to cover all bases and they have a back-up plan in place.

Joey Veerman is the alternative option. The PSV Eindhoven man did partake in the European Championship with the Netherlands over the summer.

It’s stated that the 25-year-old midfielder is now ‘of interest’ to United, if the Reds cannot seal a deal to sign the aforementioned Ugarte.

Erik ten Hag is keen to continue to build up a squad with a core of Dutch players, and with extra funds now available due to INEOS, a move for Veerman could now make sense.

The verdict

We’re firmly of the opinion that United have no choice but to sign a defensive midfielder of some description during this transfer window. Be it Ugarte or Veerman. Casemiro is now looking every bit an ageing 32-year-old. He needs a youthful defensive midfielder in the dressing room who can come in and take his place as and when required.
