Man United are weighing up a transfer move for Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Ruben Neves.
This Manchester United squad feels like one that’s in a pretty good place at the moment, though there is still more work to be done.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is probably three or four top-quality signings from having a squad that should be capable of competing on all fronts. Whether or not a move for Ruben Neves is an absolute necessity remains to be seen. However, the interest is there.
The story comes from 90min.com, who state that United have added the 24-year-old Premier League star to their list of targets. What’s interesting is that it’s claimed Neves is likely to be allowed to leave Molineux.
Apparently, United have prioritised other positions, though ‘central midfield is still a need’ in the overall rebuild, while a move for Neves is touted as an ‘opportunistic approach’.
It’s claimed that Wolves are readying themselves to part with Neves, amongst others, as the owners, Fosun, are ‘looking to restructure’ their commitment to the Midlands outfit. While they’re not pulling out altogether, it looks like they’re looking to cut their financial investment somewhat significantly.
You’d imagine Wolves won’t be selling Neves on the cheap, with a fee of over £30million likely to be required. For a player who is still super-young and with a couple of years of Premier League experience under his belt, that’s incredible value.
The issue for United would be fitting Neves into the starting line-up. He can play deeper, though he’s not as physical or defensive as Scott McTominay. I don’t see him starting at the heart of our midfield either, particularly with Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes playing pretty well at the moment.
It could be an astute piece of business if Pogba was to leave this summer. I’m sure Donny van de Beek will have something to say about that, mind…
