Man United have eyes on both Diogo Costa and David Raya, though any deal is dependent on David de Gea.
It’s common knowledge that Manchester United are potentially weighing up a move to bring in a new shot-stopper this summer.
This isn’t a knock on David de Gea. More due to the fact that Erik ten Hag could look to bring someone in who fits his playing style a little more.
Both Brentford’s David Raya and FC Porto’s Diogo Costa have been linked with potential moves over the last few months. Now, The Express back up those claims, suggesting that United are ‘admirers’ of both of them. However, they reiterate the fact that a deal is solely dependent on De Gea.
That’s because neither Raya nor Costa would want to have to fight with De Gea for starts. Obviously, that’s understandable given how much this club loves their current number one.
These are two starters within their own rights, so bringing in one of these, while keeping De Gea, feels like a disaster waiting to happen. Much like Dean Henderson, these guys are too good to sit on a substitutes bench.
The problem here is that replacing De Gea isn’t easy. He’s probably the best shot-stopper I’ve ever seen. Would you trade that in to bring in a relative unknown like Raya or Costa? Given we have no idea whether they’d be able to handle the pressure of playing for the biggest club in the country, it really would be a risk.
Either way, we have to put our full faith in Ten Hag and trust whatever decision he makes will be the right one for this club going forward.
