Man United are pushing to sign Wout Weghorst on loan.
Manchester United, although cash-strapped right now, simply have to bring in a striker of some sort.
After losing Cristiano Ronaldo, the Old Trafford club are a man down in a key area of the field. Erik ten Hag knows this, hence why several forwards continue to be linked with a Reds switch.
The most likely option is a veteran striker on loan. The Glazer family, understandably, aren’t willing to invest massive amounts of cash into the club as they’re looking to sell.
Enter, Wout Weghorst.
The rumours started yesterday afternoon. They picked up speed pretty quickly. The latest information from the Manchester Evening News claimed that United were ‘advancing’ with a move to sign the 30-year-old.
Apparently, Weghorst is viewed as the ‘ideal support’ player for Anthony Martial.
Weghorst currently has eight goals in sixteen games for Besiktas, while on loan from Championship club Burnley.
This deal could be complicated as this will be a negotiation between three clubs. Besiktas do hold the option to buy Weghorst outright for just under £10m, though it remains to be seen whether they’ll do that in order to ensure the Dutch international remains with the Turkish side.
Weghorst appeared to wave his goodbyes to the Besiktas fans after scoring yesterday – which further leaves us all intrigued at this point.
United were never going to find that world-beater during this window, though Weghorst is a proper old-school striker. That’s exactly what United need right now. This could be an astute piece of business if United could somehow pull it off – though this one will likely run and run until right up to the transfer deadline.
