Man United agree five-year contract with Alex Telles, will now seek to agree free with Porto: report

Man United links to Alex Telles went rather quiet over the last few weeks. Probably due to interest increasing in Sergio Reguilon. However the Portuguese is seemingly back on the Reds’ radar…

Let’s start with the back-story. On August 5th, we covered a claim from Correio da Manha, who stated that United were ‘advancing’ to sign Alex Telles from Porto.

Like we said, all had gone pretty quiet on that front, but with Reguilon set to join Spurs, it looks as though Telles is back on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s mind.

It’s a transfer that seems to be moving pretty quick, too, if what Mohamed Bouhafsi tweeted last night turns out to be true…

Apparently, Telles has agreed a five-year contract with United, while the Reds will now seek to agree a fee with FC Porto to sign the defender.

There’s also interest from Paris Saint-Germain in the Brazilian full-back, who is now ready for a move away from the Portuguese outfit.

So why are Man United interested in Alex Telles?

I’ll be the first to admit that left-back shouldn’t be the number one priority. Instead, I’d much prefer to see United go hard for a right-winger or a centre-back.

Luke Shaw did a decent job last season, while Brandon Williams continues to improve and grow. That said, Telles would represent an improvement to our starting line-up. If the price is right, Solskjaer is well within his rights to explore that option.

To me, it feels like somewhat of a panic signing. Understandably, United are frustrated at the lack of deals being done. Two fresh faces are needed before the window slams shut with the club looking to appease the fans somewhat.

Telles is an excellent player who should walk into our starting line-up. It is a gamble, though, as he’s never played in England before and our South American signings always tend to struggle…
