Man United among clubs showing an interest in Mateo Kovacic

Man United are interested in signing Chelsea midfielder, Mateo Kovacic.

Manchester United’s squad is still nowhere near the finished product. Erik ten Hag has much work to do. The current ownership status of the club being up in the air does not help matters.

Whatever happens, United have to back their manager this summer and give him a decent transfer budget to spend, in order to close the gap on Manchester City.

Several names have already been linked with potential Old Trafford moves. Many more will follow. Today, Mateo Kovacic’s name has been thrown into the mix.

It’s The Guardian with the exclusive. They name United as one of many sides ‘interested’ in signing the 29-year-old midfielder. Bayern Munich and Manchester City are also keen. On top of that, it’s claimed the Croat is ‘likely’ to leave his current club, Chelsea, this summer.

Kovacic has a year left on his deal at Stamford Bridge, though uncertainty over new terms, coupled with the lack of Champions League football next season, has placed his future into doubt.

Chelsea also need to decrease the size of their playing squad, with their owner, Todd Boehly, not wanting to keep players at the club who have entered into the final year of their contract.

The London side are under pressure to generate some funds, with Kovacic deemed one of the high-profile players who are likely to depart.

Kovacic is an excellent ball carrier, a great passer and someone who’d improve most sides across Europe. There’s no doubt that signing him would make United’s midfield better – though beating out competition from City, and others, will be far easier said than done.
