Man United are leading the chase to sign defender Ronald Araujo.
Defensively, it has been nothing but a hot mess for Manchester United this campaign.
The Old Trafford club have seriously struggled for any sort of consistency in both their play and back line. Injuries and bad performances have led to a chopping and changing of partnerships – not allowing a regular back two to learn each other’s style of play inside out.
Raphael Varane is now the only mainstay within the defence. He’s the only one that everyone seems to trust. It’s about finding him the right partner and giving him the best chance at success.
Enter, Uruguay defender, Ronald Araujo. United are showing an interest in the man who currently plies his trade for FC Barcelona.
The story comes from Mundo Deportivo (Wednesday print edition), with the translation coming via Sport Witness. Apparently, United are ‘on pole’ to sign the 22-year-old defender.
Ralf Rangnick’s side are named as the ‘team that asks the most’ about making the signing, with Liverpool also showing an interest in the young man.
It goes without saying, us fans would take any central defender over the current crop right now. We’ve conceded 29 goals in the league already this season, which is over double the number that Manchester City have shipped.
Sport Witness do stress that this story could be pushed by Araujo’s agent and representatives in order to grab himself a bigger contract on better wages. However, if the right proposition comes in for the Uruguay star, why shouldn’t we believe he’d be willing to make a move?
I’d like to think that he’d probably make up half of United’s first-choice centre-back pairing the moment signed. That’s just how bad we’ve been defensively at the moment.
