Man United believe Toby Collyer is a player who could make a first-team impact in future.
Manchester United fans are eagerly awaiting mid-June and the opening of the transfer window. No doubt Red Devils supporters hope INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe can make a positive first impression on that front. However, finances are expected to be tight.
The Old Trafford club may have to sell before they can buy, at least marquee additions anyway. Some money has been freed up as both Raphael Varane and Anthony Martial are exiting at the end of their contracts, though you’d like to hope some big name sales will be made – like Jadon Sancho and Mason Greenwood.
However, in the event that Ratcliffe chooses to keep the belt tight, United will turn towards youth, according to The Telegraph. Without delving too far behind their paywall, one man the club are looking at promoting into the senior setup is Toby Collyer.
The Telegraph state that United believe the emerging 20-year-old midfielder is a player with ‘first-team potential’ ahead of the 2024/25 season.
Collyer joined United from Brighton in 2022, having already earned England U17 caps in the past. He is yet to make his professional debut, though you get the feeling that is just around the corner.
A defensive midfielder by trade, Collyer could look to capitalise on United’s lack of quality in that area of the field right now. Casemiro has apparently had a falling out with the manager and he’s the only recognisable defensive midfielder in the senior squad right now.
In our opinion, all roads point to Collyer being involved during pre-season tour. The Reds head to the States in July in order to kick things off, which could be an excellent opportunity for the talent to prove his worth.
It’s down to Collyer to impress and take his chance, though, as Erik ten Hag has made no secret of the fact that it’s up to these kids to grab their opportunities with both hands, rather than being presented with them on a plate. Just look at Zidane Iqbal as a major example of that.
