Manchester United have an outstanding reputation when it comes to signing and developing the next big thing. Credit where it’s due, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is doing his utmost to continue that mantra.
From homegrown academy graduates to young players acquired and making a first-team impact, the Baby Faced Assassin is trying to get the Old Trafford outfit back to doing what they do best.
Solskjaer has been willing to take recommendations from former players and teammates, it was Ryan Giggs who suggested Daniel James to be signed.
Now, it seems as though the Norweigian is at it again, this time following information from none other than Luis Nani. The story comes from the Daily Star, who link Sporting Lisbon left-back Nuno Mendes with a potential Reds switch.
Apparently, United are ‘putting together a £10m package’ for the talented 17-year-old, who is keen to move.
Mendes, who is an attacking left-back, has an expiring contract in 2021 and has yet to commit his long-term future to Sporting.
Again, this feels like another case of United trying to hoover up all the best talent, see Hannibal Mejbri’s £10m move to Salford Quays from last summer as the prime example.
United have an excellent relationship with Sporting. From Cristiano Ronaldo to Nani and more recently, Marcos Rojo and Bruno Fernandes. I’d suspect that if the Reds pay up, this deal could get done.
However, left-back is a pretty stacked position right now. You look at Luke Shaw who seems back to his best, with Brandon Williams now pushing him all the way… It won’t be easy for Mendes to break into the team anytime soon…
