Man United aren’t hanging around this summer, with the Reds now pushing hard to sign Raphael Varane.
Jadon Sancho’s move to Old Trafford is all-but-official, with Manchester United now moving on to other targets. Centre-half is arguably the greatest need in the current squad, with Raphael Varane constantly named as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s number one target.
Well, Solskjaer must be in dreamland if this latest report turns out to be true… It comes from Mark Ogden for ESPN, who states that United may well land Varane.
Apparently, United are ‘close to finalising’ a deal to sign the £172-a-week star (wage indicator), whose contract is winding down with just a year left to run.
It’s written that Varane is Solskjaer’s top defensive target and United are ‘ready to move’ for the Frenchman after receiving encouragement from Real Madrid – who are prepared to negotiate a ‘realistic fee’ to let the player leave.
ESPN add that there’s no timeframe in place for the deal, though talks between United and Varane are already underway. United did consider Sevilla’s Pau Torres as an alternative, but the pursuit of Varane has now ‘stepped up’.
Real Madrid are in a difficult position. Either sell Varane now while he still has some value or risk losing him for free next summer. It seems as though Los Blancos have chosen to do the former, with United leading the charge as things stand.
The Spanish giants are looking to generate some cash in order to allow Carlo Ancelotti to rebuild his squad, with United now confident that a deal to sign Varane can be done for just £42m. In this day and age, for a player of his calibre, that feels like an absolute steal.
Be wary of interest from Paris Saint-Germain, who’d no doubt match the asking price in a heartbeat, whereas the French giants could easily go toe-to-toe in terms of what sort of weekly wage they could offer.
What a signing this would be though!
